How to get from Bali to Lombok by boat

Padang Bai in east Bali has the most boats to Lombok: fast boats to Bangsal and Senggigi, and the public ferry to Lembar. Fast boats also leave from Sanur, Serangan and Nusa Dua in south Bali; those crossings take longer and there are fewer of them.

Where you stay on Lombok decides the port. Bangsal, on the north-west coast, is closest for the north-west and Senaru. Senggigi is closest for the west coast and Mataram. Lembar, the public ferry port, is closest for Kuta Lombok and the south.

If you travel with a car or motorbike, the public ferry is the only option. For everyone else, the fast boat is the quicker crossing; the public ferry is the cheaper one.

How long is the ferry from Bali to Lombok?

The fast boat from Padang Bai to Bangsal takes 1 hr 30 min to 2 hrs 40 min on the water; the public ferry to Lembar takes about 4 hrs 30 min. Your travel day is longer: add the road to the port in Bali, check-in, and the road from the arrival port to where you stay. An example from Seminyak to Senggigi:

  1. SeminyakYour hotel in Bali
  2. By road51 km
  3. Padang BaiCheck-in: see your ticketDeparts 08:30
  4. Fast boat2 hrs 30 min
  5. BangsalNorth-west LombokArrives 11:00
  6. By road26 km
  7. SenggigiYour hotel on Lombok
Crossing time is the time on the water, as shown in a timetable. Door-to-door time runs from your hotel in Bali to your hotel on Lombok; plan your day with that. Example: the 08:30 Semaya Darmajaya Fast Ferry on the Ferryhopper timetable for 5 November 2026.

On the Ferryhopper timetable for 5 November 2026, 12 of the 13 fast boats from Padang Bai to Bangsal leave at the same time as a boat of the same operator to Gili Trawangan, and most of them reach Bangsal after Gili Trawangan. Ask the operator whether your boat calls at the Gili Islands first.

Before you travel

  • Fast boat tickets

Ferryhopper sells the fast boats from Padang Bai, Sanur, Serangan and Nusa Dua to Bangsal and Senggigi. Check-in time and place are on your ticket: finding the departure point.

  • Public ferry tickets

ASDP sells tickets for Padang Bai to Lembar online through Ferizy, the ASDP website and app, from 60 days before departure. ASDP advises buying your ticket at least one day before you travel.

  • Luggage, surfboards and bikes

Free luggage differs by operator: on Ferryhopper, from 1 bag of 20 kg to 2 bags of 30 kg together. Per operator. Ask the operator about surfboards and bikes before you book a fast boat.

  • Reduced mobility

Ask the operator about steps, help with boarding and wheelchairs before you book: what to ask.

  • Flights on the same day

We cannot say whether a connection will work. Boat and flight are separate bookings, and the sea can delay or stop boats: what to count.

  • Cars and motorbikes

Only the public ferry carries vehicles: IDR 169,400 for a motorbike and IDR 1,184,100 for a car up to 5 m (class IV A). If you rent a vehicle in Bali, ask the rental company whether you may take it to Lombok.

  • Children

Age groups differ by fast boat operator: on Ferryhopper, the child fare applies up to 9, 10, 11 or 12 years depending on the operator. Most operators on this route list infants under 2 or 3 years free of charge.

  • Nyepi

On Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, Padang Bai port closes. In 2026 the ferry service there stopped from 04:00 on 19 March to 11:30 on 20 March. The date and times change every year; check them before you plan a crossing in March or April.

Weather and disruption

Check before you travel

Strong wind and high waves in the Lombok Strait can stop the fast boats. In December 2022, the fast boats between Padang Bai and Gili Trawangan were suspended for at least 2 days, and travellers were directed to the public ferry. In bad weather the public ferry crossing can take up to 6 hrs.

BMKG, the Indonesian weather agency, publishes a daily wave forecast for the Lombok Strait crossing: maritim.bmkg.go.id. If your boat is cancelled, contact the seller of your ticket. For a Ferryhopper booking, tell Ferryhopper, because refunds are not automatic.

Where you arrive on Lombok
