Before you travel
Good to know about the Gili Islands
Practical points for the three islands. Check-in, luggage rules and times per boat are in the route guide.
Arrival on the beach
Many boats land on the beach, and you may wade ashore with your luggage. Pack bags you can carry, and keep phones and documents in a waterproof bag. Reduced mobility: what to ask before you book.
No cars or motorbikes
Motor vehicles are not allowed on the islands. You walk, cycle or take a cidomo, a horse-drawn cart. E-bikes and electric scooters are banned too.
Between the islands
A local boat cooperative runs public and island-hopping boats between Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air. Buy tickets at the harbour.
Money
Gili Trawangan has more than 10 ATMs. Larger hotels and dive centres take cards; smaller places want cash. Bring cash if you stay on Gili Meno.
Season and sea
The dry season runs from about April to October and is driest in August; the wet season is heaviest from December to February. The swell is usually highest from June to August.
Not part of Bali
The Gili Islands belong to North Lombok regency, in the province of West Nusa Tenggara. The Bali tourist levy applies to visits to Bali: see the Bali guide.
Questions about the Gili Islands
Which of the three islands should I stay on?
Gili Trawangan is the largest and busiest, Gili Meno the smallest and quietest, and Gili Air is in between. All three have direct fast boats from Bali: for 5 November 2026, Ferryhopper lists 17 a day from Padang Bai to Gili Trawangan, 16 to Gili Air and 8 to Gili Meno.
Can I visit all three islands on one trip?
Yes. Island-hopping boats run between the three islands, and public boats connect them with Bangsal on Lombok. Buy tickets and check the times at the harbour.
Are there cars on the Gili Islands?
No. Village and regency rules allow only transport without a motor: bicycles and cidomo, the horse-drawn carts. E-bikes and electric scooters are not allowed either.
Do I need cash on the islands?
Bring some. Gili Trawangan has more than 10 ATMs and larger hotels take cards, but smaller places want cash, and Gili Meno has few or no ATMs.
