Plan your trip
Plan your boat trip from Bali
Which port to leave from, whether a day trip works, how to hop between the islands, and what to check before you cross: the planning questions, with links to the answers.
Planning
Questions to settle before you book
Start with the port and the route; the other questions depend on where you are going.
Which Bali port should I use?
Padang Bai, Sanur, Serangan or Nusa Dua: which ports have boats to your island, and how far each one is from where you stay.
Day trip to Nusa Penida
The first boat from Sanur to Banjar Nyuh leaves at 07:30 and the last boats back leave at 17:00: 9 hrs between arrival and the boat back.
Day trip to Nusa Lembongan
Boats from 09:00 and back until 17:00 from Mushroom Bay. Check the landing point of your return boat.
Island hopping
Fast boats between the Gili Islands and Nusa Penida, public boats between the Gilis and Lombok, and local boats between the Nusa islands.
Tourist levy and island fees
The Bali levy of IDR 150,000 once per trip, and the fee of IDR 25,000 per adult on Nusa Penida, Lembongan and Ceningan.
Weather and sea conditions
The swell in the straits is usually highest from June to August, and high waves also occur in other months. BMKG publishes a daily wave forecast for the straits.
Tickets and access
What to check before you book
Conditions differ by operator. The conditions shown before you pay and your ticket decide, not this page.
If your boat is cancelled
Contact the seller of your ticket. For a Ferryhopper booking, tell Ferryhopper by chat or in My trips: its help pages say refunds are not processed automatically. Ferryhopper submits the claim and the operator makes the final decision. A refund or another trip may apply when the operator confirms the cancellation. A boat that sailed without you does not qualify.
If you cancel yourself, the operator’s time limits and conditions apply, and Ferryhopper lists a fee of €6 per booking unless you chose a flexible option. Some tickets cannot be refunded. Keep any paper ticket you collected: Ferryhopper asks for collected tickets back before it changes or cancels them.
These are Ferryhopper’s general help pages, not rules for each boat in Indonesia. For the public ferry or a ticket bought at a harbour, ask where you bought it.
Reduced mobility
We found no information from operators or harbours on step-free access or help with boarding. Booking sites disagree: listings for Sanur to Nusa Penida say the boats are not wheelchair accessible, and some Gili listings say they are.
At Jungut Batu, Mushroom Bay and many Gili landings, boats land on the beach and you may wade ashore. Banjar Nyuh has a pier with pontoons and Rocky Fast Cruise lands at a jetty, which does not mean there are no steps.
Before you book, ask the operator: does the boat moor at a pier, a pontoon or a beach at both ends? Are there steps or a gangway? Does the crew help you board and carry bags? Can a wheelchair or walking aid travel?
Flights on the same day
We cannot say whether a connection will work, and we give no minimum time. Boat and flight are separate bookings, and Ferryhopper states that it is not responsible for costs caused by delays or cancellations.
After landing, count immigration where it applies, your bags, the road and boat check-in. Before a flight, count the last boat, the road to the airport and airline check-in.
The sea can stop boats for more than a day: in December 2022, fast boats between Padang Bai and Gili Trawangan stopped for at least 2 days. If a missed flight would be costly, consider a night in Bali before you fly.

Finding the departure point
Your ticket decides. It names the check-in time and place, and a check-in desk can be an operator’s office, not the pier. Most operators on Ferryhopper ask you to collect your ticket at the port, so allow time for that.
Check whether your ticket names a harbour, an office or a meeting point. If it is unclear, ask the operator before you travel. Where the Bali ports are: Which Bali port should I use?
Luggage and tickets per operator
What Ferryhopper lists per operator. Extra luggage can cost more at the port. Ask the operator about surfboards, bikes and other large items.
