How long is the boat to the Gili Islands?

The fast boat from Padang Bai to Gili Trawangan takes 1 hr 30 min to 2 hrs 45 min on the water. Your travel day is longer: add the road to the port in Bali and check-in. On the islands there are no cars, so the last part is on foot, by bike or by cidomo, a horse-drawn cart. An example from Seminyak:

  3. Padang BaiCheck-in: see your ticketDeparts 08:30
  4. Fast boat1 hr 30 min
  5. Gili TrawanganHarbour, east coastArrives 10:00
  6. No carsWalk or cidomo
  7. Your hotelOn Gili Trawangan
Crossing time is the time on the water, as shown in a timetable. Door-to-door time runs from your hotel in Bali to your hotel on the island; plan your day with that. Example: the 08:30 Semaya Darmajaya Fast Ferry on the Ferryhopper timetable for 5 November 2026.

Before you travel

  • Choose your island first

Not every boat calls at every island. On the Ferryhopper timetable for 5 November 2026, 17 boats sail from Padang Bai to Gili Trawangan, 16 to Gili Air and 8 to Gili Meno. Check the arrival island before you book.

  • Fast boat tickets

Ferryhopper sells the fast boats from Padang Bai, Sanur, Serangan and Nusa Dua to the three islands. Check-in time and place are on your ticket: finding the departure point.

  • Luggage, surfboards and bikes

Free luggage differs by operator: on Ferryhopper, from 1 bag of 20 kg to 2 bags of 30 kg together. Per operator. Ask the operator about surfboards and bikes before you book.

  • Reduced mobility

Many boats land on the beach on the islands, and the islands have no motor vehicles. Ask the operator about steps, help with boarding and wheelchairs before you book: what to ask.

  • Flights on the same day

We cannot say whether a connection will work. Boat and flight are separate bookings, and the sea can delay or stop boats: what to count.

  • Children

Age groups differ by operator: on Ferryhopper, the child fare applies up to 9, 10, 11 or 12 years depending on the operator. Most operators on this route list infants under 2 or 3 years free of charge.

  • No cars on the islands

There are no cars or motorbikes on Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno or Gili Air. You walk, rent a bike or take a cidomo, a horse-drawn cart, from the harbour to your accommodation.

  • Nyepi

On Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, Padang Bai port closes. In 2026 the ferry service there stopped from 04:00 on 19 March to 11:30 on 20 March. The date and times change every year; check them before you plan a crossing in March or April.

Weather and disruption

Check before you travel

Strong wind and high waves in the Lombok Strait can stop the fast boats. In December 2022, the fast boats between Padang Bai and Gili Trawangan were suspended for at least 2 days, and travellers were directed to the public ferry to Lombok.

BMKG, the Indonesian weather agency, publishes a daily wave forecast for the Lombok Strait crossing: maritim.bmkg.go.id. If your boat is cancelled, contact the seller of your ticket. For a Ferryhopper booking, tell Ferryhopper, because refunds are not automatic.
